The Dolphin was the first computer designed by the System Development Department of Xerox in Palo Alto, California. SDD was formed to create products based on the computing system technology developed at Xerox PARC. One of the designers of the Alto (Chuck Thacker) and Brian Rosen (who would create the PERQ) were the principle designers of the Dolphin. The Dolphin was unusual in that it had no local removable disk storage, so initial bringup required it to be on a network. It was the first machine to use 10 megabit ethernet (as opposed to the 3 megabit 'experimental' ethernet used on the Alto and Dorado), and it was capable of running Alto programs.
